It was a tough week for the Wildcats Varsity baseball team, which took losses to Romeo, Brandon and De LaSalle. The team’s only win on the week came from Clarkston during a May 17 conference series.
The Cats suffered a disappointing loss against the Romeo Bulldogs with an 11-1 score on May 22. Oxford only collected two hits coming from the bats of Gage Warzecha and Ben Gingell. Gingell scored the only run for the Cats, also going a little over 4 innings, and striking out eight Romeo hitters.
Oxford took another tough loss on senior day, May 19, with a 9-4 score against Brandon. The team took a 4-0 going into the top of the 7th. Brandon plated 9 runs in the inning, which proved too much for the Cats to overcome. Mario Scribner and Justin Allen had the only two hits.
The Wildcats lost a May 18 slug fest to De LaSalle Collegiate with a 13-7 score.
The offense was lead by Zak Schwering going 3 for 4 with 3 singles, 1 RBI and 1 run scored. Justin Allen and Cam Marshall each had 2 hits. 5 other Wildcats had 1 hit.
Connor Romine threw well in the game going 4 innings stiking out 6 batters. Evan Brunning battled but took the loss in the game.
On May 17, Oxford won the last conference series of the season by beating Clarkston with a 9-7 score. It was an exciting finish to the game that saw Oxford take a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.
Clarkston responded with 3 runs to tie the game. Oxford started the 8th with a lead off triple by Anthony D’Alessandro. D’Alessandro was plated from a sac fly from Zak Schwerin.
The offense was lead by D’Alessandro going 1 for 2 with a triple, 2 runs scored, 2 walks, Ben Nuss reaching base 4 times (2 walks, 2 HBP), 3 runs scored, and Braun Mayette 1 for 2 with 3 walks.
Josh Allen picked up the win going 2 innings. Mario Scribner went the first 6 innings only allowing 1 earned run. Oxford ended conference play with a 9-6 record.
The team is now 17-14 overall.
