The day before costumed kids hit the streets for Halloween trick-or-treating, their pets get their turn.
“Come in costume and trick-or-treat into town,” said Peg Roth, member of Clarkston Retailers Group, sponsor of the event.
“This is a community of dog lovers,” said Kevin Harrison, downtown business owner and member of the group. “Dog costumes is a huge segment of the market ? this is a fun way to show them off.”
Clarkston Retailers organized the first annual Howl-Oween Pooch Parade for Saturday, Oct. 30, starting at 12 p.m. at Clarkston Flower Shoppe, 7150 N. Main Street.
Register for costume contest at the flower shop, 12-1 p.m. Judges Harrison, Roth, and Clarkston Mayor Steve Arkswright will award prizes for best pet and owner look-alike costume; ‘most humorous; and best overall costume, 2:30 p.m. at Depot Park gazebo.
Participating retailers will distribute treats to pets and owners, and offer pet manicures, dog sitting, and other services.
“Each retailer will offer something different,” Harrison said.
Pets will also be available for adoption through Michigan Animal Rescue League and Canine Companion Rescue Center at a Pet Expo, 12-3 p.m., in the Clarkston Mills parking lot.
Clarkston Retailers Group first discussed organizing the pet parade last year, when it was founded.
“We wanted something more than just trick or treating,” Roth said.
“We look for ways to make the village more user friendly and approachable,” said Harrison. “Clarkston is unique and wonderful ? a true, old downtown. We want to help other communities know that.”
Signs will direct participants to park at Clarkston Flower Shoppe or 90 N. Main Street.
