Twelve students from Lake Orion High School are going to have an easier time paying tuition.
As of the ceremony held Friday, Feb. 4, students with high achievements in high school football, soccer, and softball officially committed to attending colleges of their choice.
After being introduced and praised by high school sport coordinators, coaches and school administrators, including Lake Orion High School Athletic Director William Reiss, students simultaneously signed their letters of intent, guaranteeing colleges interested their attendance. The letters also secured athletic scholarships to the signing students.
Shannon Inglis, soccer player at the high school, said that her choice to attend Wittenberg University in Ohio resulted from her experiences while visiting their campus.
?[The university] actually found me during a showcase game I played at a tournament I played in Raleigh, NC,? said Inglis. ‘I love the small town charm they have, and their soccer team was so friendly.
‘I’ve always wanted to play soccer in college, and I didn’t plan for it, but this last year I started training really hard for it.?
Inglis began playing soccer at age four, and began in a competitive league when she was nine. Despite her passion for soccer, she is planning to attend Wittenberg University to pursue a career in law.
Other students that signed letter of intent include football players Marques Stevenson attending Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., Danny Ney going to University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, Blake McGee going to Saginaw Valley State University, Alex Fine attending Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh, Penn., Nick Frye going to Northwood University, and Zac Zott attending Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind.
Not including Inglis, soccer players who signed include Alyssa Wesley attending Grand Valley State, Cailin Nylen going to Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio, Blake Skamiera attending Michigan State, and Jesus Ginez going to University of Detroit.
Softball player Sandra Rippon will be attending Trine University in Angola, Ind.
