OXFORD — The Oxford Village Council and village manager discussed creating a mass texting program on March 11 during a council meeting.
Anyone will be able to sign up for the program, according to Village Manager Joe Madore. It would be used to update people on what is happening in the village.
An example Madore gave was a water-main break. If a break occurs on Pontiac Street, a large number of people signed up would receive a text informing them because a large number of people drive on the street. If the break occurs on Lakes Edge Drive, a dead-end street with fewer drivers than Pontiac Street, the text would not be sent out to everyone. Instead, only residents living on the street would receive a text.
“What I eventually want to do once we start to roll it out is get something more on our website so people can understand, if they get this or if they want to opt in, where to go, where the sign-up forms are and stuff,” Madore said. “So, as I do get it … they understand they can go to our site and see it’s legit and it’s something we’re putting out there.”
Madore said he put $50 into an account to use for testing and has spent around $10. It is a pay-as-you-go system, he said. – J.G.
