A group of folks who help make Oxford Village an attractive place in which to live, work and play were honored Oct. 4 by the Beautification Commission.
Six residential properties and three commercial ones were recognized as part of the 24th Annual Beautification Awards program held in the village’s community room.
“This is our first (award),” said Charles Brett, who was honored with his wife, Evelyn. “Hopefully, it’s not our last.”
The Bretts own 640 Lakes Edge Drive.
Kevin Lynch, co-owner and manager of Lynch and Sons Funeral Directors at 39 W. Burdick St., noted this is the first beautification award he’s won since he stopped personally mowing the lawn.
“It took us some time to find the right people to do it,” he said. “I highly recommend Hi Hill (Lawn Service).”
Lynch brought his daughters – Addison, 7, and Livie, 5 – to the ceremony because they help water and care for the funeral home’s stunning flower gardens.
Lynch noted “any beauty connected to the funeral home starts” with his daughters and their mother, Melissa.
Oxford’s Beautification Commission has been around for 25 years and was created after Chairman Joe Bullen noticed how having such a group improved the overall appearance of nearby Auburn Hills.
The commission has no formal authority or powers. It’s mission is to simply “encourage” residential and commercial property owners to maintain and improve their homes, buildings and grounds.
Commission members include Kathy Hummel, Karen Etherton, Delores Ludwig and Jan Burr. Nominators for the beautification awards are Michele Curtis, Melodee Dunn, Mary Ann Schlicht and Debbie Cole.
Bullen noted village property owners have always been very good about keeping the community looking nice and “we so appreciate that.”
