Yee-haw!
Slap on those boots for some foot-stomping and line dancing at the Oxford Women’s Club Hoedown Barbecue on July 31.
The Women’s Club will host the event to benefit the organization’s scholarship program for Oxford area students.
The hoedown will be held at the Oxford Hills Golf Club from 5-9 p.m. A pulled pork dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
Music and line dancing instructions will be provided by Doug Mazzola of Dance in Sync in Sterling Heights. A cash bar will also be available.
In recent years, Nancy Wray, treasurer of the Oxford Women’s Club, said the organization has raised approximately $10,000 annually for students. “When we first started out, (we raised) about $50 or $100 (per student). But this year, nine students received $1,600 apiece. This organization only has about 22 active women. For 22 active women to raise that much money throughout the year… it’s pretty impressive in my book. We’re hoping we get a good attendance so we can keep moving forward with our program,” said Wray.
In recent years, the OWC has made donations to other charitable events, such as the Senior All Night Graduation Party, Girls’ State, and FISH, a nonprofit organization which makes food donations throughout the Oxford/Lake Orion area.
According to Wray, OWC is hoping to make this event an annual fundraiser to further the cause, “This might be something we can do on an annual basis, depending on how well it’s received. We used to have all kinds of dances and dinner/dances and things like that to raise money, but this is the first one we’ve had in a long time,” she said.
Tickets for the event are $30 and can be purchased by contacting Cathy Wendt at (248) 496-1153 or Nancy Wray at (248) 705-7502.
