Year-round large refuse collection OK’d

Brandon Twp.- Spring clean-up, as township residents have known it, is over.
The township board unanimously approved at their Feb. 17 meeting a recycling and large refuse collection proposal from Bedrock Express, LTD.
The excavating company, located at 1290 N. M-15 in Groveland Township, will provide year-round recycling and refuse collection for township residents at an annual charge to the township not to exceed $10,000. The price also includes non-recyclable collection during the month of September.
‘I think it’s a much better opportunity for refuse collection for our community and it will save the township money,? said Township Supervisor Kathy Thurman. ‘This collection is for large items and will replace spring cleanup.?
The contract has not been written and signed yet, but Thurman anticipates it would take effect April 1. Residents will schedule appointments with the township offices to take recyclable materials to Bedrock throughout the year, such as any type of metal, including home appliances; wood, including brush, logs, lumber, furniture, pallets, and new construction debris; and cement. Car tires will be accepted for a charge of $3 each and truck tires for an additional charge of $5 each. Freon extraction from refrigerators or air conditioning units will also be available.
During the month of September only, one load per household of large non-recyclable items will be accepted, including drywall, plastics, fiberglass and carpeting. The township will pay $250 per 30-cubic yard Dumpster used for large non-recyclable compressed items collected during this month, with a limit of 40 Dumpsters per year.
Materials not accepted at any time will be any kind of perishable garbage, tractor tires, asphalt, and hazardous waste including wolmanized wood, cleaners, paint, chemicals and solvent.
Residents will be required to show proper identification at their appointment time, which will be during Bedrock Express business hours. Bedrock employees will assist up to four Brandon residents per hour while they are open and will provide containers for all recyclables free of charge.
Averill Refuse and Recycling, Inc. has conducted the township’s spring clean-up for the past four years. The cost has been based on the number of people participating. Last year, the township paid $42,900 for spring cleanup on two consecutive Saturdays, in which 3,000 cubic yards of waste was collected. In 2007, the cost was $47,945.
