Classic Car and Cupcake Challenge returns Sat.

LAKEVILLE – Put a shine on that old chrome and get ready to do some serious baking because the Third Annual Classic Car and Cupcake Challenge is returning to the Addison Township Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 17.

The event will run from 1-4 p.m.

Library Director Jaema Berman called it a fun, community happening designed to bring people together and promote the library.

Automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts are encouraged to display their rides in the library parking lot.

“So many people I know and that come to the library, work for the automotive industry,” Berman said. “This is a way to celebrate them.”

Cars and bikes will be judged separately and plaques awarded for first through third places. They must arrive by 1:30 p.m. Judging begins at 2 p.m. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.

“The first year we had 40 cars here in our parking lot,” said Berman, but “last year, it threatened to rain, so a lot of car people stayed away.”

“We’re hoping the weather’s going to cooperate this year,” she noted.

Amateur bakers are once again encouraged to show off their skills in the kitchen by entering the cupcake contest. Bakers can create any flavor combination they wish so long as everything is done from scratch.

“They have to be homemade,” Berman said. “They cannot be from a mix.”

Entrants must submit a list of ingredients.

A 7-inch metal statuette depicting a baker will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.

Each contestant is required to bake a minimum of 24 cupcakes, which must be at the library by 1:30 p.m. for judging, which begins at 2 p.m..

“After the judging, we’ll have a cupcake sale,” Berman said.

Cupcakes will be sold for $1 each with all proceeds directly benefiting the library. “Last year, we made $100,” Berman said. “We’re excited to try to repeat that.”

All contestants – car owners, motorcyclists and bakers – will automatically be entered in a raffle for a variety of prizes.

There will also be a disc jockey on site to “spin the oldies,” Berman noted.

Entry forms for the car show and the cupcake contest are available at the library (1440 N. Rochester Rd.) and online at www.addisontwp.michlibrary.org.
