13 and counting: Two more burned in cagers’ hot streak

Last week, Oxford’s boys extended their record-setting basketball winning streak to 13 games. Hazel Park and Royal Oak proved no match for the Wildcats and lost by wide margins.

On Friday, Oxford hosted Royal Oak and took home a win with a 66-38 final score. Though the first quarter started out close, Oxford quickly picked up momentum when the boys, namely senior forward Michael Raisch, junior forward Trey Townsend and senior forward Dujoun Williams, started hitting 3-pointers.

By the time the game came to its halfway point, the Wildcats were leading 44-14.

According to Head Coach Steve Laidlaw, Oxford’s forward momentum only continued and led to some mature performances from the boys. Fans that night even saw an alley-oop in the third quarter by Townsend, who was assisted by senior guard Logan Coughlin.

Raisch again led the team in the victory with 18 points and five steals. Townsend followed him with 15 points and senior forward Connor Nicholson chipped in 12. From the bench, Williams put in nine points and Coughlin had six assists.

Earlier in the week on Jan. 22, the boys decimated Hazel Park on the road 70-16.

Starting down 8-7 early in the first quarter, the Wildcats scored 49 unanswered points throughout the rest of the quarter, something Laidlaw called “unprecedented.” The boys also scored 33 unanswered points in the second quarter. Williams, Townsend, Coughlin and senior forward Grant Kornburger led the team in the first half.

In the second half, junior forward Dylan Rebtoy, junior forward Levi Wiggers and senior guard D’Wayvay Turner came off the bench to keep the Wildcats ahead, especially in the fourth quarter.

Throughout the night, Townsend led Oxford with 16 points. Williams followed Townsend with the 15 points he scored in the second quarter alone. Raisch put 11 on the board and Turner had seven points.

Now 13-0 overall, the boys will be back at it on Thursday, Jan. 31 will travel to Berkley looking to beat the Bears for the second time this season.
