They are the pride of the Wildcats.
Every week they practiced and played their hearts out. They sought victory for their team and glory for their school.
For their hard work, dedication and sportsmanship, the 89 senior athletes of Oxford High School’s Class of 2005 were honored by the Oxford Wildcat Booster Club Thursday, June 2 at the Boulder Pointe Conference Center.
In order to be recognized at the Booster Club’s annual Senior Athletes Dinner, an athlete must receive a varsity letter in at least one sport during his or her senior year of high school.
During their four-year careers at OHS, the 57 male and 32 female athletes of the Class of 2005 earned 327 varsity letters.
Two exemplary senior athletes were singled out by a vote of their peers to receive special recognition.
Kyle Oliver won the George Prince Award, which is given to the Best Male Athlete. During his high school career, Oliver earned nine varsity letters in football, wrestling and baseball.
Vanessa Collier received the Helen Smith Award for Best Female Athlete. During her career at OHS, Collier earned five varsity letters in basketball, volleyball and track.
At the end of the evening’s festivities, Booster Treasurer Jeff Ziegelbaur offered some kind words about Helen Smith ? lifetime Booster member, 1952 OHS graduate and organizer of the annual Senior Athletes Dinner.
‘Without her, this evening wouldn’t happen,? Ziegelbaur said. ‘She runs this program every single year by herself. The Booster Club can’t say enough thanks for everything you’ve done Helen.?
It was noted in the program that from June 2004 to June 2005, the Booster Club donated $36,665 to Oxford Schools for both athletic and non-athletic uses.
