At 10:27 p.m. on December 11, 2020, Village of Oxford officers spotted a white 2008 Chevrolet Equinox traveling 53 miles-per-hour on N. Washington Street, 23 miles-per-hour above the posted speed limit.
Officers activated their emergency lights to execute a traffic stop, but the Equinox began to accelerate southbound, causing law enforcement to use their emergency sirens.
The vehicle, which was occupied by two men, ages 17 and 19, and a woman, whose age and race were not listed in the report, led officers on a chase, ending a residence on N. Oxford Road.
Once arriving at the residence, the suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot, leading to their detainment at gunpoint. The two young men were brothers, and the home was owned by their 47-year-old mother.
After initially refusing to divulge who was driving, the young men admitted the 17-year-old was piloting the Equinox after the mother told officers the 19-year-old does not know how to drive and told her sons to tell the truth. It turns out, the reason for this chase was the 17-year-old did not have a driver’s license and tried to elude officers because of his fear of repercussions. All this decision did, however, was turn what would have been a traffic violation into a felony offense.
The 17-year-old was taken to the Oakland County Jail and lodged on fleeing and eluding charges. The 19-year-old and the woman were released at the residence and not charged.
