One of the best features about an area with open spaces and nature like Oxford is our parks, and during the summer months, the beaches that accompany two of these parks – Scripter and Stony Lake – are open to any residents who would like to use them.
Scripter Beach, located off Glaspie Street slightly south of Lakeville Road, is open 12-to-8 p.m., seven days per week, Memorial Day through Labor Day, which falls on September 6 in 2021.
There is not a lifeguard on duty, but there are beach employees, who are there to keep a watchful eye. Public restrooms are available at Scripter Beach, which are maintained by the employees.
Stony Lake Township Park’s beach, stationed at 1397 Lapeer Road just north of Ray Road, also opened on Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day.
The hours at Stony Beach are a little wider than Scripter, as the area is accessible from 9 a.m.-to-8 p.m.
Like Scripter Beach, however, Stony is not monitored by a lifeguard, meaning users swim at their own risk.
There are some rules for visitors to follow, as all Oxford Township parks are alcohol-free and smoking, including vaping, is prohibited on the beach area.
Stony Lake Township Park features three pavilions, Albertson, Brabb, and Martin, which must be rented prior to holding your event. Renting these is an easy process, as all interested parties need to do is call the Oxford Township Parks & Recreation Office at (248) 628-1720 for availability and fees. There is no charge to simply use the beach or park your vehicle.
As we all know too well, summer in Michigan goes by in the blink of an eye, so if you have some free time, enjoy your local beaches!
