Forget what you’ve heard about this year’s summer blockbusters, the film Love & Plutonium will have Oxford residents cheering for the good guys ? or girls rather ? on Saturday, August 6.
Of course, the film in no way measures up to the epic battle between good and evil in Star Wars, but this sci-fi comedy will have its second premiere at the Oxford 7 Theater to those looking for some good entertainment.
Plutonium stars local actors Nate Topie, of Dryden, Jacquie Floyd of Utica and Jeff Priskorn, who also co-wrote the movie.
Produced by Loose Change Entertainment, Plutonium stars Topie as the evil Dr. Medlo and his crew who are forever at odds with local good girls, Justice Kitten and Little Liberty, trying to maintain a balance of power so delicate that the rest of Suburbiaville hardly know they exist. An upset balance of good and evil could result in world inhialation, or at least uneployment for the good girls and bad guys.
Topie, 30, formerly of Oxford and Auburn Hills and a father of four, said the movie was inspired by a song called ‘Living at Home with Mom? from the band Throwing Toasters.
‘Dr. Medlo is an evil scientist who lives at home with his mother and is bent on world domination,? he said.
This is Topie’s ninth film, although he originally went to Oakland University to study physical therapy. He eventually got his bachelor’s degree in performing arts.
He has had various parts in other films like 61*, Hardball and Love Hurts.He’s also performed in numerous commercials, lent his voice to radio ads and acted in an extensive amount of stage productions.
Topie auditioned for Plutonium in September 2003 and started filming at the end of the month. The film was finished in December 2003 and took 16 months to edit.
Plutonium was filmed in local cities like Pontiac, Troy and Dearborn and premiered at Novi’s Emagine Theater on June 23 to ‘rousing reviews.?
Topie said close to 180 patrons showed up to see the flick and even got occasional autograph seekers.
‘It meant something to me because if they’re asking for my autograph, I must’ve relly played a role that was autograph worthy,? he said.
Topie expects this Oxford 7 premiere to do well and said many of the other actors are expected to be in attendance at the 9:15 a.m. showing. Attendees who wear red (for love) or green (for plutonium) will recieve tickets half-off.
He said acting in Plutonium has been the most fullfilling professional experience he’s ever had because it met all of his expectations.
‘When I’ve been in other plays and other movies, they’ve met my expectations and hopes, but they do leave me hanging in some way,? he said. ‘I ended up with a great part in a great movie.?
