Being kind at summer school

Summer vacation isn’t all about running, swimming, playing and riding bicycles. For about 20 Oxford students it was about being kind.

Camp Kindness is Oxford’s K-5 Summer School, and our theme was focused on being kind,” said Leonard Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Marcie Bensman. “We provided enrichment activities in reading, writing and math but with a summer camp flare. We went outside each day to play and each grade level came up with ‘Passion Projects’ for students to do weekly.”

Some of the projects, she said, included rock painting, bubble painting, bird feeders, open ended watercolor painting and making scented playdough.

For Camp Kindness students attended three half days a week for one month. August 3 was their last day and they celebrated by enjoying popsicles.

It’s an opportunity for interacting with peers, learning and fun in a more relaxed atmosphere,” Bensman said.
