A group of fourth-graders from Clear Lake Elementary won the annual Battle of the Books competition held at the Oxford High School Performing Arts Center last week.

The winning team, Super Sticky Notes, represented Clear Lake Elementary and scored 70 points out of a possible 75. The team consisted of students Kaylee Henke, Rowan Spear, Alysse Avery, Mallory Bigelow, Rebecca Secord and Isabella Hurst.

Twenty-three fourth grade teams representing Oxford’s elementary schools came together to compete in the competition April 11.

Battle of the Books is a program for fourth graders coordinated by Oxford Public Library to encourage students to read.

The fourth-graders each read the same five books on their own time in preparation for the battle.

During the competition, 15 questions were asked of the students (three questions per book), testing their knowledge and comprehension of the books they read.

Other awards given that day included “Best Costume” and “Best Team Name.”

The “Best Costume” award went to the Super Readers, consisting of Lakeville Elementary students Jasmine Myers, Christian Massie, Freddie Shepherd, Chloe Verbeke and Mary Massie. Each student portrayed a main character from one of the books.

The “Best Team Name” award went to The INK-credible Readers, which included Oxford Elementary students Hudson Chisholm, Ian Kampo, Austyn Streeter, Aidan Ray, Keele Eberhard and Dylan Warren.

This year, students read “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes,” “Who Was Harry Houdini?,” “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil. E. Frankweiler,” The 100-Year-Old-Secret,” and “Granny Torrelli Makes Soup.”
