Corn maze helps fundraising in tough times

Atlas Twp.-If airline passengers soaring high above the rural township farmland were to glance down on Ray Porter’s fields they may just look twice and salute.
Such a reaction is due to Porter’s corn maze cut in six acres in the shape of a bald eagle flying next to an American flag with the words ‘In God We Trust? and ‘United We Stand.?
‘We’ve had corn mazes for awhile,? said Raymond, farm owner located at 12160 Hegel Road.
‘But this is the first year we’ve done such a big one with an intricate design.?
Such patriotism is reflected in the commitment locally.
Raymond and his wife Dee feel it’s important to give back to the community and thought this year’s corn maze would be a good way to do it.
‘Our children were all involved in music, and I was very involved in music,? said Dee. ‘I know music is one of the first things that gets cut when money is needed for other programs, which is unfortunate because it’s such a great way for kids to learn about themselves through expression and creativity. That’s why I thought it’d be nice to help raise money for Music Boosters.?
On Saturday several hundred walked the maze, helping raise more than $400 for the Goodrich Music Boosters.
Several other groups have benefited from Porter’s Orchard.
The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Big Brothers Big Sisters, United Way, Old Newsboys, the Lions Club, and Brandon, Kearsley, and Davison school systems have also used the facilities.
