Councils okays $102K for new DPW dump truck

Santa Claus is bringing the Oxford Department of Public Works a new dump truck for Christmas.
Last week, the Oxford Village Council approved the purchase of a 2005 Tri-County International dump truck along with snow and ice removal equipment for an amount not to exceed $102,000.
DPW Superintendent Don Brantley indicated the new dump truck will replace the department’s 1988 GMC Brigadier. Plans are to sell the old dump truck, which is valued at $10,000 to $14,000.
The new truck will cost $56,063.88. Brantley said normally this truck costs roughly $88,000, but the village is getting a municipal discount.
Tri-County International’s quote was one of three bids obtained by the DPW. Brantley said he chose the company’s truck based on personal inspection of the vehicle and information garnered from other municipalities and the Road Commission for Oakland County.
‘We did extensive research on this vehicle,? the DPW superintendent said. ‘We knew exactly what we were getting.?
Although Tri-County International did not submit the lowest bid, Manager Joe Young said the company was selected because of the ‘heavier, more durable steel construction? of its truck, which made for a ‘better investment than the low bid.?
The lowest bid was $54,600 submitted by Motor City Sterling Truck.
NBC Truck Equipment is providing the new truck’s snow and ice removal equipment for $43,565, bringing the total purchase price to $99,628.88.
An extra $2,371.12 was added as a contingency fund to allow for ‘possible changes during the building of the truck.? This increased the total approved expenditure to $102,000.
