Coverage of vets earns state awards

Congratulations to Oxford resident William Service and Oxford Community Television Channel 97, both of whom earned state awards for their superb coverage of local veterans and all the good work they do.
Service, who was commander of Oxford American Legion Post 108 for the past two years, received the Andy Gomolak Flying Eagle Award, which recognizes him as the Best Post Public Relations Officer.
‘I was very proud and very excited for our post,? he said. ‘We’ve worked really hard for the last two years and we’re very proud of the Auxiliary, the AMVETS, all of our guys.?
When Service took over as commander, one of his main goals was to garner more publicity for Post 108 and educate the public as to everything it does to help veterans and the community in general.
‘It’s kind of a family here,? he said.
In addition to being the post’s Senior Officer now, Service is a producer, host and camera operator for Channel 97, which earned a State Media Award ‘for exceptional media attention to America’s veterans.?
Both awards were presented by the American Legion Department of Michigan.
Service and Channel 97 were honored for the year’s worth of veteran-related programming ? a total of about three hours ? submitted to the state.
The footage included coverage of Oxford and Addison’s Memorial Day ceremonies, Post 108’s packing parties for U.S. troops, the arrival of Post 108’s helicopter, the Concert Americana at Oxford Middle School, the Wreaths Across America ceremony at Ridgelawn Memorial Cemetery, Easter and Christmas events, and Post 108’s gun shows.
‘Anything important going on at the post was taped and put on the air,? said Service, who, along with fellow station employee Susan Bork, was responsible for most of the footage. America ceremony at Ridgelawn Memorial Cemetery, Easter and Christmas events, and Post 108’s gun shows.
