Fourth graders at Clear Lake Elementary spent the day blind, deaf and handicapped as part of the Disability Awareness Workshop held on March 6.
The free workshop, sponsored by Oakland Schools, is meant to help the young students understand what it is like to be handicapped.
Parent volunteers, like Jenny Todd, taught students about physical disabilities, learning disabilities along with visual and hearing impairments.
‘The feedback from the students is great,? Todd said. ‘They look like they’re playing, but by the end of the day, they have more empathy and awareness for the disability.?
