Eagle Scout creates reading garden in Leonard

Congratulations to James Fifield III for officially becoming an Eagle Scout this past February.
The 18-year-old Oxford High School senior’s rank was elevated after finishing his Eagle Scout project where he created a reading garden at Leonard Elementary.
Fifields mother, Julie, works as a reading teacher at his former elementary school and suggested the idea to him.
‘The idea just kind of unfolded after that,? he said.
Fifield spent last August through November transforming a 6 by 6 outdoor area on the east side of the building into a comfortable place for teachers to read to their students during the warmer months.
With the help of other Troop 366 members, Fifield used a cement mixer to pour a concrete patio and put in three benches for sitting.
The outer perimeter of the patio was planted with flower bulbs, plants and shrubs, ranging from daises to tulips to hostas.
‘I got certain flowers that will bloom in the spring and then certain other ones that will bloom in the fall so that there’s always color around it,? Fifield said.
Fifield said he got his green thumb by working for Perennial Impressions, a landscaping company in Oxford that donated to his project.
James Lumber and Wojo’s Greenhouse also donated products.
The only part of the project Fifield found stressful was meeting his deadlines’and his age.
‘You have to have everything finished before you turn 18 in order to become an eagle,? he said.
Fifield said becoming an eagle was important to him because ‘it’s just another step that adds to your well-rounded circle. It brings out the best of my character.?
Fifield is planning on attending Grand Valley University after he graduates, but hasn’t yet decided if he wants to study pharmaceuticals or law.
