Golfers battle opponents, elements

It’s been a rough week-and-a-half for the Varsity Golf team.
Not only have the playing conditions been less than desirable, a cold, soggy, rain/snow mix against Lapeer West last Thursday and a rain soaked golf course on Tuesday against Fenton, their match against Flint-Carmen Answorth was a rainout with no make-up day scheduled.
The matches have also been heart-breaking losses.
The Wildcats lost by one shot to Lapeer West 157-158. Brandon Shinn led the Wildcats with a 37, followed by Liam Gallivan’s 38, Josh Hasking’s 40 and Doug DiPiesko’s 43.
‘We knew that they were one of the better teams in the league and we were hopeful to knock them off on our home course,? said Oxford Head Coach Terry Kelley.
It wasn’t just the playing conditions that hurt the Wildcat’s, it was the ninth hole. The six Lapeer West golfers finished the ninth hole at a combined +5, while Oxford finished at +10.
The sour mood quickly vanished the next day as the team trecked its way through 18 holes at the Oakland County Tournament. The Wildcat’s squared off against 24 other schools, and they were able to finish second, shooting a 315. They only trailed Farmington Hills, who shot a 311.
Gallivan and DiPiesko led the way with 78’s, and Hasking put shot a 79 while Schinn capped off the scoring with an 80.
Kelley was proud of the way his boys played, considering that the Wildcats were not even a factor to win the tournament.
The rough week was capped off by a six shot loss to Fenton, 149-155.
‘Fenton played outstanding on a course that was wet and soggy,? Coach Kelley said.
Depiesko led the way with a 37, followed by Schinn’s 38, Gallivan’s 39 and Hasking’s 41.
The losses dropped the Cats to 3-2 overall.
