Leader Editorial- Our picks for council: Dolan, Bejma, Kennis

It doesn’t get much more low-key than the race for Oxford Village Council with three candidates seeking two, four-year positions. Things have been mighty quiet.

But that doesn’t make it any less important – only refreshing given the nasty, much-too-long race for the White House.

We strongly encourage voters to elect D. Erik Dolan to one of those council seats.

Dolan has only served on council since April, but he’s definitely made his presence known with his no-nonsense, common-sense approach to local government.

He’s vocal. He’s tenacious. He’s logical. He’s knowledgeable. He’s open-minded and not stuck in the past. He’s an asset to the village.

Although Dolan’s only one vote, we see him as the driving force behind council’s decision to contract with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for police dispatch services.

Without his input, without his 20 years of experience as a public safety officer for Oak Park, without his willingness to stay the course and make an unpopular call, we believe it never would have happened.

As a result of this prudent decision, the village will go from shelling out more than $300,000 annually to operate a local dispatch center to spending approximately $30,000 per year for county’s top-notch services.

That’s a huge savings and village taxpayers should be grateful. They should also be questioning why it wasn’t done years ago.

Dolan is the best village council candidate we’ve seen in a long, long time. He doesn’t allow local prejudices and long-standing grudges to trump doing what’s right for taxpayers. He deserves your vote.

The candidates for the other four-year seat are retired village Clerk Rose Bejma and David Y. Bailey, former village councilman and president.

Given the choice between the two, we’ll take Bejma and urge voters to do the same.

There are no candidates listed on the ballot for a two-year council seat, but incumbent Councilman Tom Kennis is running for it as a write-in.

We urge voters to write in Kennis’ name and darken the oval next to it.
