Leonard’s Strawberry Festival returns Saturday

Once a year, Leonard comes alive with the sights, sounds and sundaes of a summer tradition that dates back to 1952.

On Saturday, July 20, the Strawberry Festival will return to delight folks of all ages with a variety of fun activities and entertainment.

A pancake breakfast at Leonard United Methodist Church will kick off the event. It will run from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Sign up for the pie-eating contest at 2:30 p.m. and stuff your face for fun and prizes.

Owners of classic cars and vintage vehicles are invited to display their motorized passions in the Cooper-Standard parking lot. Setup and registration for the festival car show begins at 9 a.m. The show opens to the public at 10:30 a.m. and will run until 3 p.m. Awards will be presented at 3:30 p.m.

Kids are invited to gussy up their bicycles and enter them in the annual decorating contest. Entrants must arrive at the Leonard Elementary School parking lot by 11:30 a.m. to be judged.

The centerpiece of the festival, the annual parade, will begin at noon and follow its usual route along E. Elmwood St. from Leonard Elementary School to Forest St. Longtime Leonard residents and former Addison Township Fire Department members Geno and Marlene Mallia will serve as the grand marshals.

Firefighters will begin scooping ice cream and serving sundaes inside the old fire hall, next door to Rowland Hall, at 10:30 a.m. They will continue until 6 p.m.

Shoppers will be able to hunt for bargains and acquire unique merchandise from arts and crafts booths lined up along E. Elmwood St. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be plenty for kids to see and do. The Upland Hills Petting Farm will be set up near the Polly Ann Trail (PAT) from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other children’s activities, including country games, inflatables, a tattoo lady, a Kona Ice truck, a mobile gaming trailer and a craft table provided by the Detroit Institute of Arts, will all be open and available from 1 to 5 p.m.

DA the Clown will perform a free magic show near the PAT at 2 p.m.

There will be a pie-eating contest at 2:30 p.m. Folks who want to sign up for the contest can do so between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Musical entertainment at the festival will include performances by Center Stage Dance Studio students at 1 p.m.; the Stix and Stone Variety Band from 4 to 6 p.m.; and The Fabulous 50s Band from 6 to 7 p.m.

The festival’s annual street dance will run from 7 to 10 p.m. with music provided by the High Moon Band.
