Local defenseman in CHL

Eleven years of practice and hard work on the ice rink have paid off for high school senior Saverio Posa.
Posa, 17, displayed his talent on hockey teams within the area and on Detroit’s Triple A Little Caesars hockey team, for which he spent four years playing.
In the 2008 OHL draft, Posa was drafted to be a defenseman on the Windsor Spitfires, a Major Junior A hockey team in Canada, and one of 62 teams in the Canadian Hockey League.
A lifelong Goodrich resident and GHS student, Posa admits the move to Canada was not easy. ‘It was a really hard decision, but I knew it was necessary toward following my dream.?
So in late August, 2009 Posa left Goodrich and moved to Windsor, Ontario to live with his billet family who provide a home for out-of-state players, the McLeans. He now attends St. Anne’s Catholic High School. ‘It’s been fun and quite an experience. I only live about an hour away from Goodrich, so I come home to visit whenever I have a day off. I love coming home to see friends and family.?
Posa has been a new face on the Windsor Spitfires for a couple months now, and his rookie year is going very well with a record of 12-5-0-1. ‘I’m hoping someday I’ll be able to go pro and live my dream of being a professional hockey player.?
Rob Gahnon, spokesperson for the Spitfires, said Posa will be eligible for the NHL draft in 2010.
‘Posa is new to the league right now,? said Gahnon. ‘Most of the time players get picked in their second or third year. They are asked to tryout at the NHL training camps.?
Gahnon said the NHL takes the highest percentage of players from among the 62 Canadian Hockey League teams. The CHL consists of the Western Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League.
‘We have no affiliation with the NHL, however we are the largest feeder team for 16-20-year-old players.?
