More tough losses for Lady Cats

Add two more notches in the loss column for the Varsity Girls Basketball team after consecutive defeats to Swartz Creek and Linden this past week.
The latest was a 40-30 loss at Linden on Monday, Jan. 18.
The game went back and fourth, with each team trading the lead at the end of each quarter. The Wildcats lead 9-5 after the opening quarter, but Linden seized control in the second, outscoring Oxford 13-6 to take an 18-15 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats responded in the third, retaking the lead after holding Linden to six points in the quarter.
After that, Linden took complete control on both sides of the ball. They held the Wildcats to three points in the final quarter and pulling away for the victory.
‘We made some costly errors tonight that Linden capitalized on,? said Head Coach Al Poynter. ‘But, I am very proud of our team for their focus and determination in a hostile environment,? he said.
Senior Megan Tilley had 15 points to lead Oxford, while fellow Senior Allie Laidlaw had eight points and four rebounds.
On Friday, Jan. 15, Swartz Creek used big second and third quarters to defeat the Wildcats 50-30.
Oxford was outscored 31-13 in those two quarters.
‘Swartz Creek is an excellent young team that played very well against us. We did some good things, but they got too many easy baskets on us, and we did not handle their pressure as well as we should have,? Poynter said.
Tilley was the top scorer with nine points.
With the losses, the Wildcats are now 2-7 overall, and 2-5 in the Flint Metro League.
‘We are in the midst of a tough stretch right now, with seven of nine games on the road, but our girls are battling and working hard to break through,? he added.
The girls play their makeup game at Lapeer East Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. before returning home and hosting Holly on Friday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m.
