OCS offers free summer food progam

Oxford Community Schools is offering free breakfast and lunch through a Free Summer Food Program at the Oxford Early Learning Center Monday through Friday from June 16 until Aug 22.
According to Karen Bissett, director of Nutrition Services for Oxford Schools, the food program is a federally funded program called ‘Meet up & Eat Up.? The program is available for all children 18 years and under, as well as individuals up to age 26 who are enrolled in an educational program for the mentally or physically disabled that is recognized by a state or local public educational agency.
There are no applications, any (child) is qualified to be able to come in and eat breakfast and lunch,? Bissett said. ‘If the parent wants to eat they can buy a breakfast or lunch for $3 to eat with their children.?
All the meals will follow the school nutrition guidelines. For breakfast, there will be an assortment offered such as cereals, bagels, mini pancakes, yogurts, string cheese, muffins, fresh fruits and milk. For lunch, Bissett said along with fresh fruits and vegetables.
‘The kids love Bosco Sticks, (chicken) nuggets and tacos,? she said. ‘Bosco sticks are like the number one selling thing in the country.?
Breakfast will be served 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. and lunch 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Oxford Early Learning Center is located at 105. S. Pontiac Street.
‘I think it’s great for the community to be able to offer this program,? Bissett said.
