OHS grad invites everyone to join her at the zoo

Kaity Fischer is spending her summer at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak working with the wildest, most dangerous beast of them all ? the media.
The 2007 Oxford High School graduate is gaining some valuable real world experience as a public relations intern for the Detroit Zoological Society.
‘I really like it. It’s a lot of fun,? she said. ‘There’s something new everyday, that’s for sure. And what’s more fun than working at the zoo??
Fischer will be heading into her junior year this fall at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) where she’s double majoring in communications and English.
She got her start in media relations as a member of the high school’s DECA Club, an association of students who are planning careers in marketing, management and entrepreneurship.
Folks may remember it was Fischer and fellow graduate, Janelle Grai, who spearheaded the effort to get the Wildcat logo painted on the water tower across from the high school.Last summer, Fischer interned for the automotive supplier Delphi. This summer she wanted to work in a different environment and face some new challenges.
‘I thought the zoo would be a great way to get a more rounded resume,? she said. ‘It’s definitely a different kind of experience.?
As a PR intern, Fischer spends most of her time drafting press releases, editing and escorting members of the media around the zoo. She’ll be working there through the end of August.
Her favorite exhibit is the otters.
‘They are so much fun to watch,? she said. ‘They’re crazy, always running around.?
Fischer wants to invite everyone in Oxford and Addison to the zoo on Thursday, July 16 for the second annual Summer Zoomance from 6 to 9 p.m.
Summer Zoomance allows grown-ups to revisit their childhood memories of the Detroit Zoo while creating new ones during a peaceful twilight stroll among the award-winning animal habitats.
Live entertainment will take place in the Main Picnic Grove. Adult beverages and nostalgic foods will be available for purchase from zoo concessions.
Admission is $8 and parking is $5.
Parking is free for Detroit Zoological Society members.
