Oxford runners leave Holly and Lapeer West in the dust

Spring break didn’t hurt the Wildcat runners one little bit.
The Oxford Varsity Track Teams hosted Holly and Lapeer West at a tri-meet on April 21 that saw the Lady Cats walk away victorious, while the gentlemen split with a win against West and a loss to Holly.
The Lady Wildcats defeated Lapeer West 88.7 to 48.3 and Holly 75-68.
‘We ran really well considering it’s our first meet after the break,? said Head Coach Andrew McDonald. ‘I was really impressed with the 3200 relay.?
Oxford’s ladies (Liz Hazelwood, Kati Schmidt, Lauren Cribb and Carly Gailey) took first place in the relay with 11:20. Cribb came in first again in the 1600 meter with 6:16, a personal career best for the distance runner.
Other lady runners placing in the top were: 100 hurdles – Jenelle Parker in third with 20.35; 100 meter – Krysten Sylva, in second with 13.57 and Darci Kujawa in third with 13.84; 1600 meter – Sarah Lukas in third with 6:35; 400 meter relay – Megan Davis, Vanessa Collier, Deann Kujawa, Krysten Sylva in first with 55:13; 400 meter – Nikki McKay in first with 1:11.47; 300 hurdles – Natalie Lukas in third with 58.64; 800 meter – Liz Hazelwood in second with 2:44.09; 200 meter – Deann Kujawa in first with 27.9, Ashlee Eller in second with 28.81 and Krysten Sylva in third with 29.03; and 1600 meter relay – Teresa Miner, Vanessa Collier, Deann Kujawa and Liz Hazelwood in first with 4:38.
In field events, sisters Kasey and Kalyn Cookingham took the forefront with top finishes in both shot-put and discus. Kasey placed first in shot with a throw of 31?5?, and second in discus with 79?2?. Kalyn came in second in shot with 28?9?, and third in discus with 75?10?.
Other ladies placing in field events were: long jump – Deann Kujawa with 14?2.5?; and high jump – Vanessa Collier in third with 4?6?. Pole Vault was not contested.
The Oxford Varsity Men had a slightly tougher meet with an 84-39 win against Lapeer West and 56-73 defeat against Holly
Taking top running positions were: 3200 relay – German Guerrero, Pat Streit, Kevin Brown, and Donnie Richmond in first with 8:20; 110 hurdles – Kam Mueler in second with 17.75 and Chris Schnur in third with 17.76; 100 meter – Andrew Darin in third with 12.10; 800 meter relay – Andrew Darin, Alex Austin, Dave Kourtijan and Jim Henry in second with 1:45; 1600 meter – Donnie Richmond in first with 4:44; 400 meter – Pat Streit tied for third with 53.62; 300 hurdles – Kam Mueller in second with 44.94 and Kevin Brown in third with 45.65; 800 meter – Donnie Richmond in first with 2:01; 200 meter – Andrew Darin in first with 24.5; and 3200 meter – Donnie Richmond in first with 10:00.
Once again leading the Oxford men in field events was Vince Belitsos taking first in both shot-put (49?10?) and discus (128?1?). Other Wildcats placing in field events: long jump – Jim Henry in second with 17?10.5?; shot-put – Scott Salgat in second with 36?10?; and discus – Scott Salgat in third with 101?8?.
‘I knew Holly would be close,? said McDonald. ‘I could tell we had some areas we needed to work on.?
The Oxford track and field teams traveled to compete against Brandon on Wednesday, April 28. McDonald said the dual-meet should be a good one.
‘We should be able to compete against them well,? he stated. ‘It should definitely be a good match up with our distance kids.?
