On March 24, Oxford residents Vicki and Chuck Haskin presented a wooden flag to Danielle Stublensky, Director of Communications for Oxford Community Schools. The Oxford Strong wood flag was designed and built by their son, Charles Haskin, a graduate of Oxford High school, who now lives in Taneytown, Maryland.

According to Chuck, his son was home for a funeral last fall for his aunt and noticed all of the Oxford Strong signs posted in the windows of Oxford and Lake Orion businesses showing their support for the Oxford Schools.

On the way home he decided to try to design a flag for the Oxford Schools,” Chuck said.

Charles said, “I remember sitting at my desk — for my day job — and seeing the news notification pop-up about a school shooting and seeing the word ‘Oxford.’ I graduated with the Class of 1994, and have a small group of friends from high school I am still in contact with to this day. One of the injured kids was the daughter of one of those people. I knew at that time I wanted to make something for him and his family.

I was new to the CNC carving world as I used to do all my carving by hand with a Dremel. This winter I had finally slowed down on vendor shows and orders and was able to take my time and figure it out. I wanted it to be perfect, and the end result was better than I hoped. I sent the first one to him and his family and the second one went to my parents where they took the reins about getting it donated to the school system.”

The flag displays the Oxford Strong slogan along with the OHS Wildcat mascot. It is now displayed in the district offices on N. Washington St. Charles started an online business called The Hive Warehouse, found on Facebook at The Hive Warehouse, where he builds custom wood projects. — Don Rush
