Oxford resident Nathan Engler, 12, was honored for being Michigan’s Phase 1 student winner in the Fuel Up to Play 60 national competition to fight childhood obesity. The program empowers kids to take charge of their health by spending 60 minutes a day engaged in physical activity.
Hard work and persistence paid off for the Oxford Fire Department as the agency was recently awarded a $187,000 federal grant to purchase 28 new airpacks and a compressed air filling station.
Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Dr. William Skilling and Jim Schwarz, assistant superintendent of curriculum, are traveling approximately 8,300 miles to Cape Town, South Africa to make a presentation at the International Networking for Educational Transformation conference.

About 50 Oxford and Addison residents packed the Oxford meeting room last week to urge Oxford Township board members to fight any changes in a court judgement that limits airstrip use of property now owned by Phillip Handleman. Neighbors worry that changes will mean an expanded airport role.
Bill Church announced Tuesday that the Church’s Lumber facility in Oxford is one of several affected by a consolidation within the company, and the store would close immediately. It was just three weeks ago that Church told The Oxford Leader that the Oxford store was not closing.
For the second straight meeting, the Oxford Township board can’t decide how to computerize township offices so that it gets the most benefit for the least cost.

Three more breakings and enterings discovered in downtown Oxford early Friday morning. Windows were broken with a small bar and several items were stolen from Jim’s Restaurant, Kessler’s Doge dealership and Boron gas station.
S. Lee Gravlin of Leonard was appointed Chief Probation Officer of the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan. This is the largest circuit in Michigan, covering Wayne County, which has 27 Circuit Judges.
A dump site was found on the corner of Coats and Drahner on Saturday. Neighbors did some digging and found an envelope with a name on it. The sheriff was called and the refuse was removed. This is the same area neighbors cleaned up last fall in a joint effort.
