Schools need more teachers

With less than two weeks until the start of school, Clarkston doesn’t have enough teachers.
Board of Education members grappled Monday with how to fill openings at six of the district’s seven elementary schools, created by higher than anticipated enrollment numbers.
The board was presented with three options: recall remaining teachers laid off last spring, hire full-time classroom aides, or adhere to contract language’likely resulting in larger class sizes.
‘If I had my druthers, I’d go with the teachers,? said Superintendent Dr. Al Roberts. ‘Aides do not have the skill-set certified teachers would have. If you’re going into surgery, you’d want a surgeon, not a general practitioner.?
The board will look at information presented earlier this week and return with recommendations at a meeting scheduled for Monday, Aug. 25, 7 p.m.
Classes begin Sept. 2
