Silver Fox Folks provides plenty for seniors

Atlas Twp.-On Nov. 1, 1981 Jeanette Pierson and Audrey Coffee wanted to create a place to socialize with their friends in the community. Together they created ‘Silver Fox Folks,? a program that allows senior citizens in the area, ages 55 or older, to enjoy themselves and get out of the house for a day.
‘Friends at the library said they’d like to do something for senior citizens, because there wasn’t anything for seniors back then,? said Pierson. ‘People enjoy the camaraderie and the programs and the food. It’s a good way to meet new people in the community.?
Program Director Lisa Holbrook coordinates the senior activities, which meet the third Tuesday of each month. ‘We provide new activities each month for seniors,? said Holbrook. ‘It’s a great opportunity for seniors to get out, socialize, and stay active.?
The number of members continues to grow, with more than 112 households on the Silver Fox mailing list.
Activities so far this year have included trips to Port Huron, Charity Island, and Lapeer, and also lunches throughout the district.
The next activity will be at noon, Nov.18 at the Davison Senior Center. There will be a harvest lunch and there will be a patriotic theme in honor of Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. The Davison Men’s chorus, with special guests Lou Tenniswood, Ron Middleton, Frank Hecht, and Jack Powers, will be featured for music.
‘We typically are subsidized through the use of a block grant from Atlas Township, so the trips are made as affordable as possible.?
Costs vary depending on the program, but Silver Fox Folks membership is free and can be obtained by stopping into the Goodrich elementary schools, where forms are available.
