Slow start for softball team

To start a season in which they’re aiming for district and regional titles, Wildcat softball took one win and four losses last week.

At a Lake Orion tournament on April 13, the ladies beat Waterford Kettering and dropped games against Rochester and Goodrich. Throughout the day, Head Coach Kenny Allen said junior Sarah Tyrrell, sophomore Alexis Cardona and sophomore MaKenzie Brown consistently batted well and junior Kara Lange and sophomore Caityn Dahlerup were strong from the pitcher’s mound.

During their one win of the day against Waterford, Brown led Oxford with five runs battled in (RBI). She was followed by Cardona with four hits and four RBIs. Tyrrell also put up strong numbers with three runs and two hits.

In their first double header of the season against Romeo, the Wildcats fell twice in close games. Allen said both games came down to the final innings and were “a complete slugfest.”

Allen noted the key efforts of Olivia Makarewisz, a freshman pitcher, who played her first varsity double header and stayed on the mound for an entire game.

Behind the bat, junior Gabby Dinges, senior Chloe Allen, Cardona and Tyrrell led Oxford throughout both games with two runs and two hits apiece. Chloe Allen added two RBIs in the second game.

Other key players against Romeo were sophomore Megan Lupu with two hits and four RBIs, sophomore Caroline Marsh with two hits and two RBIs, as well as senior MaKenzie Miller and sophomore Emma Morris with two RBIs apiece.

Now 1-4 overall, the Lady Cats will play again on April 18 when they host Stoney Creek for a doubleheader.
