Summer storm blows in, knocks out power

The DTE power outage map for Thursday, Aug. 4 show areas affected.

The winds blew and the heavens opened last week and the Oxford area got socked. The Leader asked readers on social media how much rain they received from Aug. 3 to Aug. 4. The consensus was that over the two-day period, over three inches of rain fell.

The rain and high winds also caused power outages in both Oxford and Addison townships.

We had a lot of trees down and about 500 houses without power,” Addison Township Fire Chief Jerry Morawski reported.

In Oxford, Assistant Fire Chief Matt Majestic said, “As far as the storm goes, we received about a dozen storm related calls from the time the storm came through until around 10 p.m. (on Aug. 3). We also had a couple of medical emergencies in that same time period. However, we were able to handle all of the calls without issue, or assistance from any of our neighboring departments — but it was somewhat hectic for a while there. In regards to how the Township and Village fared, there were multiple wires down with numerous homes losing power, as well as a fair amount of downed trees and tree limbs. In the grand scheme of things, it could have been much worse.”

According to the DTE power outage map, most of the power was restored to area residents by Friday afternoon.
