Swimmers compete at state meet: Cali Schnur advances to championship meet in Wisconsin

Two Oxford athletes competed in the 12-and-Under State Meet held at Eastern Michigan University last weekend – with one qualifying to compete at the next level.

Those who competed from Oxford July 21-23 were Cali Schnur, 12, and Alanna May, 11.

During the state meet, Cali Schnur qualified to compete at the next competition, the Central Zone 14 & Under Championship meet, which will be held in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin August 3-6.

Schnur and May were among four total Aqua Club swimmers from the area who competed in the event.

Cali Schnur placed fourth in the 50 Meter Butterfly that day with a 30.82 time; sixth in the 100 Meter Butterfly with a 1:11.63; 13th place in the 50 Meter Backstroke with a 35.22 time; and 16th place in the 50 Meter Breaststroke with a 39.59.

May secured an impressive time of 3:00.70 during the 200 Meter Butterfly.

“As one of the coaches, I’m extremely proud of these kids, with all the effort that they put in, it’s nice for them to see the reward of all the hard work that they put in,” said Aqua Swim Club Age Group Coach Janis Schnur. “They put in a lot of hard work and, at the state meet, they get to see a lot of competition and it’s nice for them to get to kind of see how they compare to the other high-level kids in the state.”

This weekend, July 27-30, several qualified swimmers from Oxford’s Aqua Club will also compete in the 13/14 & Over State Championships, which will be held in Holland, MI.

Those competing from Oxford will be Zachery Beatty, Nathaniel Johnston, Nolan May, Alex Murphree, and Cole Bukoski.
