Team raises 32Kto fight breast cancer

When groups of individuals get together to raise awareness about a cause they can do amazing things.
As of Monday, Oxford’s team for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk is in third place in the state for the amount of fund-raising they’ve done for the walk.
Maggie Barclay, Oxford resident and captain of the appropriately named Breast Friends of Inside Out Fitness, said the team of 39 have collected a total of $32,400 for this year’s walk.
Thousands of women and men will unite in cities across the country and walk 60 miles on August 11-13. The Michigan walk will start at Stony Creek Metropark and end in Harrison Township.
It’s a weekend of hope, as the walkers honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research, and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it.
Barclay has been involved with the walk for four years and has been a team captain for two. She believes the walk is important in helping find a cure for not only breast cancer, but other cancers that affect many individuals.
‘I don’t think you could get through one day without talking to one or more (people) that is involved with someone who has cancer,? she said.
To help gain even more awareness and funds for the walk, Barclay’s team will be hosting a golf outing June 3 at Devil’s Ridge Golf Club, a garage sale at her 3560 Estate Dr. home and a fitness fund-raiser on June 17 in Lake Orion.
Oxford American Legion Post 108 even has a 50/50 raffle to benefit the team on Thursday Karaoke Night.
Young, old, male and female can participate in any of these events.
‘While it’s a great cause and it’s helping people, it’s very eye opening and it’s a great weekend,? Barclay said. ‘If I could get everyone I know to do it I would.?
