Three more losses for OA hockey

It looks like Oxford-Avondale United hockey just can’t catch a break this season. Last week, the boys dropped three more games against Grand Blanc, Bloomfield Hills and Port Huron.

On Dec. 16, the boys lost with their widest margin of the week when Bloomfield Hills overcame them 8-0.

After Bloomfield just got one point on the board in the first period, the team put 23 shots on goal during the second to put the score 6-0 going into the third. Senior goalie Aaron Angelo blocked all of the other shots. Despite his 41 saves throughout the night, Angelo couldn’t bring the boys through the third period and the game ended early in a mercy 8-0.

The day before on Dec. 15, the boys remained competitive but ultimately couldn’t win against Grand Blanc. Sophomore goalie Austin Spivey made his first starting appearance of the season and made whopping 39 saves in the 2-1 loss.

After a scoreless first period, OA got points on the board first after a shot from junior Donovin Thompson, putting the score 1-0 in OA’s favor in the second period. Thompson was assisted in the goal by freshman Brian Budde, who has made assist after assist this season.

But a few minutes later, Grand Blanc tied up the game and took the lead early in the third period, from which OA couldn’t recover.

Unfortunately for the boys, their Dec. 13 game before the weekend was also a heartbreaker with a loss to Port Huron 3-2.

The game started promisingly with sophomore Brendan Vogler scoring early in first period, putting OA in the lead. Sophomore goalie Brett Dinges made his first start of the season and blocked seven shots to keep OA in the lead throughout the first.

After a short-lived tie in the second period, Thompson put another point on the board for OA, putting the team up 2-1. This held throughout the period until the decisive third period.

In the third, Port Huron put two pucks in the back of OA’s net and took the lead. Though OA played the game’s last few minutes with the goalie pulled, it wasn’t enough and the game ended 3-2 in Port Huron’s favor.

Now carrying a 2-8 record, OA will hit the ice again on Jan. 5 with the hopes of evening the score with Grand Blanc.
