A downtown Oxford business is helping local students go back to school with everything they need to tackle those classroom and homework assignments.

On Saturday morning, a group of kids assembled in front of Funky Monkey Toys at 5 N. Washington St. to fill 40 crisp, new backpacks with an assortment of fresh school supplies.

The backpacks were then given to Oxford-Orion FISH, a local nonprofit group that, as part of its work helping low-income families, distributes backpacks and school supplies, free of charge, to elementary, middle school and high school students in the Oxford and Lake Orion districts.

Funky Monkey Toys purchased the 40 backpacks and all of the necessary supplies, including three-ring binders, folders, pencils, pencil bags and sharpeners, erasers, highlighters, markers and notebooks.

“We just love helping the community,” said store owner Tom Jones. “We’ve been here nine years now and the community’s been great to us. And so, we wanted to give back a little bit.”

Every child who helped fill the blue backpacks bearing the Funky Monkey logo received a $5 gift certificate to the toy store.

“I was pleased with the turnout,” Jones said. “The kids did great (work). It was a well-organized system. They got the backpacks stuffed in record time.”
