Wilcats Soccer team 1-3 on week

The Oxford High School Boys Varsity soccer team took a tough 4-0 loss against North Farmington on Aug. 22.

The Cats fell behind a little after the half hour mark, going behind 1-0 on a quick counter-attack.

Freshman keeper Tristan Bennett made a number of saves to keep the Wildcats within striking distance.

Play continued to move at a high pace and the Raiders took advantage of their speed to knock the ball over top of the back line of the Wildcats. They scored three unanswered goals in the last 20 minutes of the contest, leading to the 4-0 loss for the Cats.

“This young team played well and will reorganize as they travel on Thursday to Dexter to take on the Dreadnoughts,” said Head Coach John Thaler.

On Aug. 18, the team fell to Dearborn Crestwood with a 3-1 score at the Detroit Country Day School 40th annual soccer tournament.

Oxford kept the game close in the first half with junior Brent Bayley tying the score when the Crestwood keeper bobbled a shot.

The Wildcats held strong but gave up two goals in the second half to a very well organized and talented Crestwood.

On Aug. 19, the Cats fell short to Macomb Lutheran North with a 1-0 score.

Later that day, the Wildcats followed that loss with a win, beating Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard with a 1-0 score.

Freshman keeper Tristan Bennett came up big in regulation that day to earn his first shutout of the season. In the PK shoot out he would stop Ann Arbor’s first pk taker and set the tone for the Wildcats.

All five of Oxford’s shooters converted their pks and seal the win 5-4 on penalties.

The team is now 1-3 overall on the season.

Next up, the team plays against Dexter on August, 24 at 5:30 p.m. at Dexter High School (2200 N. Parker Rd., Dexter).
